New Niger Delta Group Vows to launch Missiles Tuesday

Emmanuel Addeh in Yenagoa A new group, the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force, on Thursday vowed to launch six missiles, shut down Nigeria’s satellite system and enforce a ‘no flight’ operation within the country’s airspace from Tuesday next week.  The group, which said it was working closely with the deadly Niger Delta Avengers, which has claimed responsibility for the destruction of oil and gas facilities in the region, also gave the Nigerian military 48 hours to quit the region or face extermination.  The JNDLF made the threats in a statement sent to journalists in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Thursday, signed by ‘General’ Akotebe Darikoro, Commander, General Duties; ‘General’ Torunnanaowei Latei, Creeks Network Coordinator; ‘General’ Agbakakuro Owei-Tauro, Pipelines Bleeding Expert; and ‘General’ Pulokiri Ebiladei of its Intelligence Bureau.  THISDAY could neither independently verify the source of the e-mail nor the authenticity of the new group, but several other groups that la...

New Militant Group Emerges, Issues Ultimatum to Private Oil Firms

As the Federal Government moves against the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), militancy in the region has taken another dimension as a new group: The New Delta Suicide Squad (NDSS) has emerged. Unlike the NDA which concentrates its attacks on pipelines and facilities of major oil firms, the new group has threatened to destroy the equipment of private oil firms’ installations in the region. The announcement of the group came on the heels of President Muhammadu Buhari’s threat in a national broadcast to mark his first anniversary in office, to crush the upsurge in militancy in the Niger Delta which has crippled Nigeria’s oil production. The NDSS warned owners of tank farms, storage tanks and private jetties to quit the Niger Delta within seven days. It said failure to comply with the deadline, the owners of such facilities stood the risk of losing their investments. In a statement issued on Monday by the spokesman of the group, Harry Ebiye, he said: “The New Niger Delta Suicide Squ...

The Worst Government in the History of Nigeria. By Femi Aribisala

Truth has fallen in the street of this misguided Buhari administration; so much so that abject failure has been camouflaged as its triumph. It is amusing, if not very disturbing, to see the number of people the Buhari administration has brought out of the woodwork to sing its praises on this its one-year anniversary. Having arrested key spokespersons of the opposition, intimidated the press into silence, threatened the judiciary, and even arrested its non-politician critics, such as Olu Adegboruwa, on trumped up charges, the government has become confident that it has a free pass to feed Nigerians with lies about its woeful performance in office. Having won a “famous” election by telling Nigerians a tissue of lies which it then repudiated on assuming office, the government continues to believe it can also govern just by continuing to tell lies. Thus, assessing his performance in office over the past one year, the president even went as far as to boast that it has been “a year of trium...

"I will never grant your request..." ~ Justice Okon Abang to Olisa Metuh!

By Ena Ofugara On Olisa Metuh's Judge Statement, Michael Dedon Discusses the Law like He was Lord Denning. "It is a shame that your party was in power for 16 years and could not build a standard hospital in Nigeria." "And you have the guts to approach this court for permission to travel abroad on medical ground." "I will never grant your request but if you are an ordinary person I will do so." ~ Justice Okon Abang to Olisa Metuh! With the above statement credited to the judge, it is apparent that the judge is bias and that there will likely be a miscarriage of justice. It does not matter whether or not Olisa Metuh is guilty of the offence with which he is charged what is certain is that the judge has prejudged him guilty and is just bidding his time to sentence him even though Olisa Metuh did not hold any public office and refuse to build a public hospital as charged by the Judge. There is a universal standard of justice and the overriding consideratio...

Anti-Corruption Engages New Gear

FEW of us doubted that corruption will tilt the fight against it. A simple promise that President Muhammadu Buhari simply made that he would publish the names of those who looted Nigeria’s treasure and what they stolen would not be kept. The President has just discovered that his Minister for Information, the famous Alhaji Lai Mohammed would be the one to reveal the looters and their loot. We should not forget that the President mentioned that the recovered loot would be part of the resources for funding the budget. Only a CHANGE government, trusting its abilities, as this one would, would not know how challenging it is to recover looted funds. Alhaji Mohammed said today that he would unveil a list, but that there would be no names because there are litigations on the cases. He is not sure when this would be. We would therefore only have a list of sums of money (and where they are, according to Mohammed, meaning that they might not have been recovered). What does one make of a list th...
