“If I Become President Of Dock Workers, I Must Work To Fulfill The Dream Of The Workers” JOHNBULL IKHARIA
By Henry Ejeta.
Fascinated by ships, dock work and port environments in my early days as a young boy saw me taking up menial jobs at the ports in the late 1980s.
We off loaded vessels of their cargoes like fish, sugar, cement, rice, cars, industrial equipment, etc. and I remembered this gave me great joy seeing my labour work move the production and economy of the country. At that time, various challenges like government policies, stake holders and investors interests made it difficult for the interests of the worker to be projected. This is the major reason that made me to join the union.
THE BEGINNING
Johnbull or JB as he is fondly called became the unit chairman Oyenike and Oyenike G ware house Apapa, between 1993 to 1996. JB attended to union members’ welfare and resolved disputes for the stability and prosperity of the G ware house. Also in the same era, JB was the branch organizing secretary of the defunct Dock workers Union.
Between 1996 to 2000, JB became the Apapa District organizing secretary.
He was also the District Chairman RORO/ JETTIES, 2001 to 2009.
And currently the vice President of the Dock Workers Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria 2009- 2017.
IN RACE FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF THE DOCK WORKERS BRANCH
No doubt Johnbull Wisdom Ikharia rose through the ranks of the union and has gained ample experience and knowledge of the system as it relates to better life for the labour worker.
“If I become the President of the Dock Workers, JB says, I must work very hard to fulfill the dream of the worker- some of which are:- Guaranteeing stable job employment, Medicare, Safety and Pension scheme”
Johnbull Ikharia is still the current Vice President of the dock workers and served under comrade Adewale Adeyanju before he got elected as the President General in March 17th this year.
“I respect Comrade Adeyanju during our years at the branch, he is one man that is passionate about the welfare of the worker and we share the same dream, says JB”
“I have been to all the ports in Nigeria and interacted with union members. I found out that our diversity as Nigerians is our major strength as a people and I shall put this to great advantage during my tenure as president of the dock workers. Everybody shall be carried along and no region or tribe shall feel neglected”
As a former labour worker himself, Johnbull Wisdom Ikharia knows the pains of the worker and the gains to be achieved if he becomes the President of the Dock Workers Branch and this gives him great excitement seeing that speedy Dock work activities move the economy of the country to greater heights.
