Electricity consumers in Ogunlana Drive, Surulere, Lagos State on Saturday, decried the none repair of some of the transformers on the community mostly the transformer located at number 119 and also poor electricity supply by Eko Electric (EE) for some days now.
The consumers expressed their feelings in separate interviews with Genesis Nollywood TV (GNTV) in Lagos.
The hours in which electricity was supplied daily had reduced drastically.
They also said that contrary to their expectations, the reduction in supply was not accompanied by reduction in monthly billing by the company.
A resident of Ogunlana Drive, said the inconsistent power supply in the area had become ”dehumanising.
She further said the power supply to Ogunlana Drive had reduced considerably, compared to the estimated billing being brought by EE representatives, resulting in unnecessary confrontation between the consumers and the EE staff.
“What is our sin in this area that EE always give us electricity for just one hour? To make matters worse, this light comes in the middle of the night when we are usually asleep.
“The company will not even consider the shortfall at the end of the month while distributing bills for the previous month.
“This is injustice, we hope that the privatisation of power in Nigeria will provide results to the lingering power supply problems, but it is even worse now,’’ She said.
Another consumer from Ogunlana Drive. Simply known as Judas said, “It is unfortunate that we are experiencing this blackout; we pay our bills regularly, yet there is no value for the money we pay for electricity.
“I thought the new government will bring us out of the doldrums but it appears we are being plunged deeper into darkness by the DISCOs.
“It is so bad that you cannot buy food items in bulk to store in the freezer to save cost in this harsh economy, this is terrible.’’
Musa, a resident of Ogunlana Drive, said that the transformer supplying energy to the community had been faulty since a week, causing complete darkness and no power supply with no solution in sight.
An EE staff who came to Ogunlana Drive told some of the residents to bribe money before their transformers can be repaired "No money or we won't repair your transformers" he said.
Some residents by bus corner bribe them with N47,000 while those at 138 paid about N30,000. Since we at 119 could not bribe them which is not even our duty to repair transformer, EE had refused to repair the transformer after promising us they are coming for three days now. They keep telling us that they are comappealed to the company to replace and repair the transformer, adding that the outage had domestic and economic repercussions for the community.
When contacted, Mr. Essen, the Senior Manager of EE, Akerele, Surulere, Lagos. said he was aware of the issues but ordered Mr. Ilori, to mobilise some staff to fix the transformer at number 119.
As at the time of blogging this news, the staff of EE had still not fix the transformer at number 119 Ogunlana Drive.
